The Burning Bowl Ceremony

What is the Burning Bowl Ceremony?

The burning bowl is a ceremony often done approaching/entering the new year, but is a tool that can be used at any time to help one release traits and habits that he/she wishes to let go of. The ceremony is an opportunity to write down such traits you wish to let go of, place them in the burning bowl, and turn them over to the universe. This can help you to release old habits that you feel no longer serve you and make room for new ones. The ceremony can offer a boost and may be enough of a catalyst to help a person actually make the change desired!

The act of writing down personal traits, habits, and emotions, etc. actually takes things that are subjective/emotional and puts them into a physical form. The process places these things onto paper. This process can help one to release long-held habits, attitudes, attachments, beliefs and phobias, etc. If one wishes to release something, this ceremony can be a liberating catalyst to help one move forward in life. It can help one release old habits, etc. that one feels no longer serve him/her.

The "burning bowl" is often a bowl, fire pit, or grill that has had a fire reduced to burning coals. The glowing coals radiate heat and are ready to transform the paper into flame when it is dropped into the coals. For convenience, I normally use a ceramic bowl placed next to a burning candle. The paper is gently lit on fire by the candle flame and placed in the bowl to burn. Use whichever method resonates with you!

The more that people can feel and honor the release of what is on the paper, the more beneficial it is! The more senses people use in the releasing process (feeling, seeing, smelling, hearing), the more beneficial the process can be for them.

Meanings of fire:

Fire is associated with transformation. As a source of light, it is associated as Spirit/God/the Divine, illumination and enlightenment, as well as wisdom and knowledge. Because fire can turn objects into ash (leveling even the largest objects), it is seen as source of purification and transition, as well as renewal. Fire is both fluid-like and very powerful!
